ZE records started in 1978 after two slimy New York G'ntl'm'n (just kidding--were two Euro hacks lookin to crash this beautiful country I like to call America), Michael
Zilkha and Michel
Esteban, met through mutual friend John Cale. The label would go on to cradle NY's precious No Wave scene for the next ten years, releasing some of the best efforts of the 80s (including a really fucking terrible New Wave Christmas song by The Waitresses, who you may also know as the creators of that truly touching and beautiful hymn, "I Know What Boys Like"). In all seriousness, without ZE Recs, No Wave probably wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of months; the label readily popularized the genre and instead of establishing itself as some sort of bizarre kitschy area, it flourished into the oftentimes depressing, but always danceable thing on this compilation. The actual release has extensive notes and photographs; I have yet to purchase a copy, however, I would love nothing more than to have a solid copy of this album to sing and dance to in the car. This was released in July on Strut records which is also home to a large number of other
really fantastic and well-put-together compilations.
ZE Records VA-Ze Records 1979-2009Here's an added bonus if you're enjoying the above release. I found this online a bit ago, I have absolutely no idea who compiled this together, but I really enjoy it. Some of these songs are a bit more kitschy, something ZE tried its best to avoid, but are still really fantastic*:
VA-No Wave New York Style*Actually, as I am now finding out, a Residents tribute compilation; enjoy that instead!
