Fag Cop - I'm Fuckin' Dead

Whenever I hear bands like this, it reminds me of a band my friend Rick had at one point. Basically, accidental, comedic quasi-lo-fi under the moniker Dan Marino Band. Check them out: http://www.myspace.com/danmarinoband

I don't have the files on me, but if anyone's interested, I'm sure Rick would send them over.

ZE Records & NY No Wave

ZE records started in 1978 after two slimy New York G'ntl'm'n (just kidding--were two Euro hacks lookin to crash this beautiful country I like to call America), Michael Zilkha and Michel Esteban, met through mutual friend John Cale. The label would go on to cradle NY's precious No Wave scene for the next ten years, releasing some of the best efforts of the 80s (including a really fucking terrible New Wave Christmas song by The Waitresses, who you may also know as the creators of that truly touching and beautiful hymn, "I Know What Boys Like"). In all seriousness, without ZE Recs, No Wave probably wouldn't have lasted more than a couple of months; the label readily popularized the genre and instead of establishing itself as some sort of bizarre kitschy area, it flourished into the oftentimes depressing, but always danceable thing on this compilation. The actual release has extensive notes and photographs; I have yet to purchase a copy, however, I would love nothing more than to have a solid copy of this album to sing and dance to in the car. This was released in July on Strut records which is also home to a large number of other really fantastic and well-put-together compilations.

Here's an added bonus if you're enjoying the above release. I found this online a bit ago, I have absolutely no idea who compiled this together, but I really enjoy it. Some of these songs are a bit more kitschy, something ZE tried its best to avoid, but are still really fantastic*:

*Actually, as I am now finding out, a Residents tribute compilation; enjoy that instead!

Imaginary Softwoods - Imaginary Softwoods

download.
Stoned ambient tales. Very sophisticated synth explorations recorded on cheap equipment, but due to the quality of the recording, it causes the tracks to seem much more intimate, unlike most similar acts who remain austere and callous throughout their performances.

Group Inerane - Guitars From Agadez (Music of Niger)

download
Dig Group Doueh? You'll dig these guys. Group Inerane is an amalgamation of local folk music, blues, and guitar psychedelia. Pretty frantic sounding as well, like, spitting mad (the guitars often mimic the shrill howls and chants). This is my shitty description.

fuzzy

Surfer Blood - Astrocoast

download
This album is really cool. Distorted power pop with some serious hooks and solid songwriting. Fuzzy too, kids.
Link from my bud at the noise is
Yo

Cromagnon - Orgasm

download
Psychedelic meanderings which predates a lot of the noise that would sweep through music in the past 3 decades.
ATTENTION
SOUNDS LIKE PRIMITIVE ANIMAL COLLECTIVE MEETS FREE FOLK
That may get someone to check it.

Disappears - 7"s

I live in the suburbs, so the closest thing I have to a "local music scene" is in the city of Chicago. I saw Disappears play with Implodes (another really fantastic Chicago band) a short while ago. Both bands have been rapidly improving and I'm excited to see where they will take things. Disappears' first two efforts, a pair of 7"s, are available for free on their blog. They somewhat recently released a really fantastic limited edition cassette, which is being distro'd at Reckless Records.
